I fear that the, almost, continuous 'phsyco drama' that led the Tories (my political homeland) which led you to select charlatans, fruit loops and the truly hopeless as leaders has not bottomed out, so you're nailed on to be opposition for far too many years until the 'Conservative Party', and its true and electable values, returns.
Until then, in terms of defence (which the Tories let down time and time again): keep your puttees ironed and re-build your belt kit because, even though our reserve committment has long-expired, we'll be required to 'man-up' and step in to defend the 'flag-shagger demo crew' from harm because they'll be far too busy collecting their UC &PIP to spend down the boozer to actually put themselves in harms way.
While it’s easy and convenient to criticise the “former” PM for this joke, we should bear in mind that the inability to appropriately fund defence is a choice that is shared by at least 40% (and probably more) of the electorate. In these financially constrained times, the revealed preference of Lib Dems, Greens (!) and the majority of the PLP is for the UK to become Belgium with nuclear weapons.
If anyone needs a better illustration of why Starmer was such an inept and incompetent PM you need look no further than the Defence Review and the Defence Investment Plan. Why accept all the recommendations of the very well developed review led by the authoritative and respected Labour Peer, Lord Robertson, without understanding the financial consequences. You can understand why Labour Ministers are so cheesed off when they have had to make so many excuses for the delay in saving Starmer’s embarrassment. Now the DIP has at last been published it is obvious that Defence is paying the price for the abolition of the two child benefit cap and the failure of the Govt to be able to curb welfare spending. Credit to John Healey and Al Carns for not going along with Starmer’s broken promises but shame on Dan Jarvis for putting personal ambition above honour to the military which he serviced with distinction and in solidarity with his respected colleagues.
